Metro Open Streets Grant Program
Open Streets initiatives temporarily close streets to automobile traffic and open them to cyclists, pedestrians and other modes of non-motorized transportation.
Overview
Open Streets initiatives temporarily close streets to automobile traffic and open them to cyclists, pedestrians, and other modes of non-motorized transportation. Open Streets have become an innovative advancement in the movement toward livable cities. They are an increasingly common strategy in regions seeking innovative ways to encourage mode shift to sustainable modes of transportation, reduce traffic congestion, and improve economic and public health.
Created in 2013, the Open Streets Grant Program has the following goals:
- Offer opportunities to experience public transportation, walking, and biking, potentially for the first time.
- Encourage the adoption of sustainable transportation modes for the future.
- Promote community engagement to develop policies and infrastructure for multiple modes of transportation.
To date, Metro has funded four cycles of Open Streets events, which have taken place in 38 different jurisdictions. These events have resulted in approximately 248 miles of street closures for 70 events.
Current Open Streets Cycle
Metro’s current Open Streets Cycle Five was approved at the January 2024 Board meeting. The board authorized a $5.5 million award for 16 events throughout Los Angeles County, which are scheduled to be staged from January 2024 through December 2025. The first Open Streets Cycle Five event is planned for late April 2024 and the last event in November 2025.
Future Open Streets Cycles
Metro is preparing to release the upcoming Cycles for Open Streets, which will run from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2029. This new cycle is being developed to support the World Cup, Olympic, and Paralympic Games, with a total of $10 million of competitive funding available.

Additional workshops will be scheduled in late summer 2025 to assist with applying, developing competitive proposals, and obtaining technical support. For more on the Metro Board directives that inform this program, please view the 2022 Board Motion and 2023 Board Report.
